Starting a business?
Start it right, step by step
Six steps from idea to open for business. Follow the checklist yourself, or let us do the paperwork while you get on with building your business.
Sound familiar?
Starting a business shouldn't start with a headache
Most new business owners we meet feel the same way. You're not behind, you just need a clear plan.
- You have an idea, but no idea where to start with ABNs, GST and structures.
- You're worried about getting something wrong with the ATO.
- You don't know how much tax to put aside, or when it's due.
- You want to spend your time on customers, not paperwork.
The checklist
Your new business checklist
-
Step 1: Choose your business structure
Sole trader, partnership, company or trust. Your choice affects your tax, your personal liability and your paperwork.
We explain the options in plain English and recommend one.
-
Step 2: Get your ABN
An Australian Business Number lets you invoice other businesses. It's free to apply for. If you're trading under a name other than your own, you'll also register a business name.
We apply for your ABN and business name for you.
-
Step 3: Decide on GST
You must register once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year (or straight away for taxi and ride-share). Below that it's optional.
We'll tell you whether registering now makes sense, and handle it.
-
Step 4: Open a business bank account
Keep business and personal money separate from day one. It makes bookkeeping faster and tax time far easier.
We help you set up accounts for GST and tax savings too.
-
Step 5: Set up your accounting software
Xero or MYOB, connected to your bank, with the right accounts for your type of business and a professional invoice template.
We set it all up and show you how to use it.
-
Step 6: Get ready for your first BAS
If you register for GST, your first BAS will come around quickly. Put GST aside as you go so the bill is never a surprise.
We prepare and lodge it, and remind you well before it is due.
